PDP-11 BEGINNINGS:
Initially, when Unix from Bell Labs was distributed in the 1970s, the code source was included in the operating system that allowed researchers at Universities to extend and revise Unix. The first Unix system at Berkeley was a PDP-11. It was installed in 1974 and later on it was used, for broad research, in the computer science department. Many universities showed their interest in the software at Berkeley. That's why in 1977, Bill Joy, then a graduate student at a Berkeley, collect and sent out the first Berkeley Software Distribution tapes.
The first Berkeley Software Distribution
was not a complete operating system rather it was an add- on to the Sixth Edition Unix also known as Version 6 Unix. In 1978, the Second Berkeley Software Distribution was out. Updated versions of the first Berkeley Software Distribution and two new
programs; text editor and the C shell were included. These two
programmers are even present today.
Soon after other releases of 2BSD ports were changed to the Virtual Address Extension based releases of BSD. From 1983, 2.9BSD included code from 4.1cBSD. This was the first full OS( a modified version 7 Unix) release. In 1922, the latest release 2.11 BSD, was first released, since then its updates from volunteers continuing 2003.
